Moldova's pro-European President, Maia Sandu, has secured a second term in office, winning the presidential runoff held on November 3, 2024. With 99% of votes counted, Sandu garnered approximately 55% of the vote, defeating her challenger, Alexandr Stoianoglo, who received 45%.
Sandu's re-election is seen as a significant endorsement of her commitment to steering Moldova towards European Union membership. In her victory speech, she stated, "Today, dear Moldovans, you have given a lesson in democracy, worthy of being written in history books."
The election was marred by allegations of Russian interference, including claims of vote-buying and organized voter transportation. Authorities reported that approximately $39 million was funneled into Moldova to influence the election outcome.
Despite these challenges, Sandu's victory underscores the electorate's desire for closer ties with the European Union.
International leaders have extended their congratulations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Sandu's resilience, stating, "It takes a rare kind of strength to overcome the challenges you've faced in this election."
Sandu's re-election is expected to bolster Moldova's aspirations for EU membership, with ongoing efforts to implement necessary reforms and strengthen democratic institutions. However, the allegations of foreign interference highlight the geopolitical challenges Moldova faces as it navigates its path towards European integration.
