The Roman Catholic Church has elected a new pope: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been chosen as the 267th pontiff, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement was made at 6:07 p.m. local time, when white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the successful conclusion of the conclave. Shortly thereafter, Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti proclaimed "Habemus Papam" from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, introducing the new pope to the gathered faithful.
Pope Leo XIV is the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in Chicago, he has a diverse heritage, including Italian, French, and Spanish roots. His extensive international experience includes missionary work in Peru and leadership roles within the Augustinian Order. Most recently, he served as the head of the Vatican's Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide.
The conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV was notable for its size and diversity, with 133 cardinal electors from five continents participating. The election concluded after four rounds of voting over two days.
Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, after a 12-year papacy. As he begins his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV faces numerous challenges, including addressing internal Church reforms, responding to global geopolitical tensions, and engaging with a rapidly changing world.
