Mark Carney Leads Liberals to Victory in Canadian Federal Election

OTTAWA, Canada - 29 April 2025

Mark Carney has led Canada's Liberal Party to a historic fourth consecutive term in government, securing victory in the federal election held on 28 April. While the final seat count is pending, projections indicate the Liberals will form either a minority or slim majority government, marking a significant political comeback under Carney's leadership.

The Liberals' resurgence follows a period of internal turmoil and declining public support. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned in January amid mounting criticism over rising living costs and a housing crisis. Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, assumed the Liberal leadership in March and was sworn in as Prime Minister on 14 March. He promptly called a snap election, aiming to capitalise on shifting political dynamics.

A pivotal factor in the election was the influence of U.S. President Donald Trump's rhetoric and policies. Trump's threats of imposing tariffs and suggestions that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state sparked a surge in Canadian nationalism. Carney's campaign effectively harnessed this sentiment, positioning the Liberals as defenders of Canadian sovereignty.

In his victory speech, Carney stated, "We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons" . He emphasised a commitment to rebuilding global alliances and reducing economic dependence on the United States.

The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, faced unexpected losses despite earlier leads in opinion polls. Poilievre's alignment with Trump-style politics and perceived inadequate response to U.S. threats contributed to the party's decline. Notably, Poilievre trailed in his own district.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) suffered significant defeats, with leader Jagmeet Singh losing his seat and subsequently resigning. The NDP's diminished presence in Parliament raises questions about its future influence and potential role in supporting a minority Liberal government.

Carney's administration faces the challenge of addressing domestic issues such as housing affordability and economic inequality, while navigating complex international relations. His leadership marks a shift towards technocratic governance, with an emphasis on economic expertise and measured diplomacy.
